Founded in 1870, Canterbury Museum is the city's premier museum and is housed in a historic building, with neo-Gothic architecture and many original period features. Featuring a number of buildings, vast exhibition spaces and many interactive displays, attractions at Christchurch's Canterbury Museum include fossils and geology displays, Maori treasures and artefacts, and the museum's 'Exploration of Antarctica' exhibits, with detailed displays about the many expeditions to the Antarctic which have started on New Zealand's South Island. Canterbury Museum is situated in the centre of Christchurch, at the entrance to the Botanic Gardens.
